New Stained Glass Project

Oriel Hicks has a new project in the pipeline. She has been selected to design and make two new stained glass windows for the Children's Hospice South West project near St. Austell, called Little Harbour.
This will be opened in December 2011 by Lady Mary Holborow, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. Sadly, this does not give enough time for the windows to be completed, but hopefully at least one panel in each of the windows will be in place, giving an idea of what is to come in the spring.
The windows are nearly 14ft high, from floor to ceiling and will be positioned about 12ft apart, giving a feeling of encompassment between the two. Work will start in the studio in September and will continue throughout the winter months, so if you are in Scilly at that time, please visit the studio to check on progress.

Art Scilly Week retrospective

Art Scilly was a great success this year with classes in painting, sketching, fused glass, lino cut printing, jewellery, raku firing and more. The local artist on all the islands held craft fairs, exhibitions or open studio events. There will be photos online at www.scillyartweek.co.uk throughout the year, but in the meantime, here is a taster.
Next year's event will be between 12th-19th May, so keep an eye out nearer the end of the year for availability of courses!

Art Scilly Week

Art Scilly week starts on May 7th this year and is an opportunity for anyone and everyone, whatever their level of skill, to have a go.
Several of the local artists are going to be giving tuition in everything from bookbinding to jewellery, or from sketching and oil painting to glass fusing. Other artist, not actually teaching, will be happy to chat informally to visitors on what motivates and inspires them, or the finer points of their techniques.
This is the ideal time to visit Scilly if you are, or aspire to be, creative.
Each of the off-islands will have a dedicated day, on which to exhibit the crafts and talents of their particular residents in a local hall or gallery, so we hope you will come and support the venture. We intend to make this an annual event, so if you can't book up for this year, try again between 12th-19th May 2012.

New Arrivals at Phoenix

Ah well.... It all got away from us at that point & the summer took on a life of its own!
We're in recovery now.
Two of the units have had a change of occupancy. Scilly Stuff, run by Mike & Karrie, has been too successful, so they have retrenched to work from home, selling their wares only at craft fairs in future and take "retirement" more seriously. Tracy Brown with her feltmaking and chocolate has gone from running two outlets to one, and is based solely at Old Town now, but comes over to visit. Our waistlines will be better for it, no doubt!
We now have two new craftspeople in the units, Namely Liza Howells and Paula Smith.
Liza specialises in hand crafted cards and pictures made from beach findings, while Paula is creating beautiful and original silver jewellery. (see picture)
We wish them both the best of luck in their new ventures, and hope that the enthusiasm they feel for their crafts never diminishes!

summer hols are here

August has arrived and the summer hols are in full swing.
Not much time to write, just long enough to apologise for the long gap since the last blog. This is mainly because the old computer turned up its toes & died on me.
It has taken this long to find out how to use the new one properly.... That's the trouble with being a dinosaur!
More to follow when September arrives & I can think straight again.
All brain power is being diverted in trying to lurch from crisis to crisis, without falling off the tightrope at the moment.

Half Term is nearly here...

So was that the summer.... or is there more to come??

Hopefully there will be plenty more sunshine as the season wears on, but if not, the Phoenix craft studios have plenty of indoor activities suitable for all ages & abilities. Mike & Karrie teach enamelling, button jewellery or mobile making, using beach-found objects. Oriel gives tuition in painting on glass "roundels", fabric (bags) and ceramics (mugs or plates). For the over-fourteens, there are classes in Tiffany glass techniques. This involves cutting, copper-foiling & soldering individual pieces of stained glass to make a suncatcher for your window.

Prices are from £7.50 to £25 and include all materials.

As well as these advertised craft sessions, Tracy can usually be prevailed upon to show you how to make something beautiful in felt, and Vic & Imogen sometimes share their printmaking and painting skills too. So come and find out a bit more this half term week.

art scilly week

Art Scilly week starts this Saturday, 8th May. This is a new venture, to encourage visitors and locals to visit our galleries and maybe have a go themselves.
There will bea demonstration of enamelling techniques by Mike & Karrie on Saturday morning, and a talk & demonstration on stained glass through the ages in the stained glass workshop on the Monday. It is also the one time in the year when Oriel will be doing classes in fused glass, as well as the Tiffany techniques which are available all year.
Sue Lewington has also been invited over to give classes in bookbinding and watercolour painting in the upstairs gallery.

The busiest weekend of the year is back and we have come up with several ideas instead of the usual tee shirt.

if you really want to splash out, there's also a 10" square gig dish.

If you can't make it to the Phoenix Workshops to see the work of our resident artist, Imogen Bone, she will be showing at Gallery Tresco in their new exhibition starting on Easter Monday, 5th April.

You'll have to be quick though, as her work is much sought after!

A New Season

Christmas and the New Year festivities are out of sight, and Easter is not yet in view, but the first few visitors have arrived for the spring half term.

We are open and (almost) ready, with new ideas and products for the coming season.

If you can't cope with the wind and rain, come down and have a browse, or treat yourself to one of our craft sessions.

You could make your own souvenir to take home.

PHOENIX CRAFT WORKSHOPS is a co-operative, comprising five small businesses in the Isles of Scilly off the end of the Cornish peninsular.

We aim to work in a way that re-uses or recycles materials wherever possible, with an emphasis on sharing talents and resources.

Most of us are also happy to share our skills with visitors, by giving tuition in our chosen field, and this has proved an ideal way to add a new dimension to your holiday.

Whether you are young or just young-at-heart, we can give you the chance to make and take home your own unique memento of your stay on our beautiful Islands!

In time, individual artists may change, but there will always be much to see and do, and a warm welcome to all who come and find us down at the Porthmellon Estate on St. Mary’s
